Dear Animal Defender,
This past year, we have witnessed profound shifts in the fight for animal rights. Every victory we celebrate, every life saved, every law changed is because of your unwavering support.
From banning the dog meat trade in South Korea to freeing Tule elk from deadly confinement, we are seeing the results of decades of tireless activism. Three captive elephants — Osh, Mikki, and Punch — have taken their first steps toward sanctuary, thanks to the pressure we’ve placed on exploitative zoos. The San Francisco Zoo’s panda acquisition plans were blocked, a monumental stand against the suffering of animals in entertainment.
Our work is not done. Elephants still languish in captivity. Wild animals still face extermination in their native habitats. The cries of millions of farmed animals go unanswered.
With your support, we will continue this fight and win.
Thank you for standing with us. The animals need you.

In Defense of Animals
Every day, billions of animals suffer at the hands of industries that exploit them for food, entertainment, research, and sport.
From farms to roadside zoos, from fur stores to the dog meat trade, animals are treated as mere commodities.
Expose cruelty: Through undercover investigations, legal challenges, and media outreach, we shine a light on animal exploitation.
Demand accountability: We hold corporations, governments, and individuals responsible for cruelty.
Rescue and rehabilitate: Our sanctuaries and rescue operations provide direct aid to animals in desperate need.
Create lasting change: By advocating for legal protections, we dismantle the systems that perpetuate cruelty.
After more than 30 years of relentless advocacy, South Korea banned the dog meat trade! This landmark decision spares millions of dogs from brutal slaughter. But our work isn’t done — we are expanding efforts to end the trade in Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and China.
What’s next:
For nearly 50 years, Tule elk at Point Reyes were trapped behind fences, dying from thirst while the National Park Service catered to the beef and dairy industry. Thanks to years of activism, legal challenges, and public pressure, part of the fence has finally been dismantled! This is a crucial first step toward restoring the park to a natural, fence-free sanctuary for all wild animals.
Our efforts to free captive elephants from zoos and circuses reached new heights in 2024. Three elephants — Osh from Oakland Zoo, Mikki and Punch from Louisville Zoo — have started their journey to sanctuary.
What’s next:
We have fought for the strongest sentences for abusers, ensuring that animal cruelty is met with real consequences. From rescuing dogs left to die to securing felony charges against perpetrators, our legal advocacy is making history.
This year’s impact:
From Mississippi to Mumbai, our sanctuaries
serve as lifelines for animals in desperate need.
Freedom Farms: Our California sanctuary now cares for 20 rescued cows and is becoming a model forsustainable, plant-based living.
IDA India: Our team treats nearly 2,500 street animals each month while providing a permanent home for 95 blind and disabled residents.
Hope Animal Sanctuary: We have rescued and rehabilitated hundreds of abandoned and abused animals, giving them a second chance at life.
Jindo Love Rescue: 46 dogs flown from South Korea – 40 adopted into loving forever homes.
